2011 Head of the Schuylkill Regatta: October 29 and 30th

No one expected snow before Halloween, but that’s what Mother Nature had in store for us this year. The wind, freezing temperatures and snow resulted in the cancellation of Saturday races beginning at noon and a delayed start the next day. By the time NRR youth arrived for their races on Sunday, it was still very cold, but the sun was out, the winds were relatively light, and the youth were ready to row!
“We came away with fast times for all and nice results for the girls’ quads and the girls’ double,” says Coach Mark Malone. Read his race summary.

2011 USROWING MASTERS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS: MARK MALONE BRINGS HOME THE GOLD (AND SILVER TOO) details here

NRR'S NEW OAR STORAGE SYSTEM
In 2011, NRR replaced its old, falling-down, aluminum storage shed with a sturdy new structure. Its purpose: to hold all NRR oars vertically and in an organized fashion.
When used correctly, this new set-up is a vast improvement over our previous arrangement.
But, just what is the correct way to store oars in the new racks?
Click Here for a quick tutorial that will – we hope—get us all on the same page (or rack) when it comes to oar care.

Going the Ultra-distance:
Local Teens Craig Slater, Jr and Eric Nieminen set indoor rowing records.
NRR rower Craig Slater, Jr had already taken home gold or silver from nearly every spring scholastic or juniors race he entered; attended the USRowing Junior Men’s National Team Sweep Selection Camp in Kent, CT; made the US Junior National rowing team; placed third in the pairs (2-) race at the Junior World Championships in Eton, England and was chosen to carry the American flag at closing ceremonies.
What other challenge could he possibly undertake during the last few, typically lazy summer weeks before returning for his senior year at the Ranney School?
How about setting an indoor rowing record? Or two.
On August 28-29, 2011, 18 year-old Slater and Lincroft native Eric Nieminen, also 18, erged in tandem for 25 hours non-stop, setting a new record for longest continual tandem row by heavyweight men age 19 and under.
They also set a new tandem record in the same age/size category for distance covered in 24 hours - 338,691 meters!
Congratulations, Craig and Eric on this amazing accomplishment.

NAVESINK RIVER ROWER CRAIG SLATER, JR EARNS SPOT ON USROWING JUNIOR NATIONAL TEAM PHOTOS FROM JR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
THIS JUST IN FROM NRR Coach Mark Malone:
We have our first USRowing Junior National Team member!!

Craig Slater Jr. officially made the USRowing Junior National Team and will be leaving for England at the end of this month to compete in the Junior World Championships in Eton, England August 4-7, 2011. At this time, Craig is scheduled to row in a pair, but boat lineups are always subject to change. He will be training in Princeton over the next few weeks leading up to the departure.
I am particularly very proud of Craig, who learned to row at NRR and has been rowing in the early morning with the masters men for the past two years. We took him under our wing, training him in what we know best 'sculling' (particularly rowing singles). With his competitiveness, determination and just plain grit, by this spring he had become one of the top junior single scullers in the country.
Last year he pulled his first awesome ERG score and, with zero experience in anything but sculling, went to a USRowing Junior development sweep camp, where he learned and soon excelled in another type of rowing. Then this year, with just one sweep camp under his belt, he was invited to the next level Junior men's sweep selection camp and makes it through the cuts that eliminated some of the top sweep rowers in the country. Craig, who just completed his Junior year at the Ranney School, is one of only 5 juniors (rising seniors) to make the team. Just an amazing accomplishment!!
We all look forward to the results from the 2011 Junior World Championship, but more importantly we look forward to watching Craig continue to mature into a fine young man as he takes his rowing passion to the next level.
We're all very proud of 'our' Craig Slater Jr.!!
