NRR RACING NEWS
Where'd We Go? How'd We Do?
2009 Highlights
Beginning with the Catch the Cooper in June, our club had members competed in both sprints and head races throughout the 2009 racing season. Members of the NRR masters rowing program competed in these sprint events during the summer: Catch the Cooper, Carnegie Lake Regatta, Navy Day Regatta, Quaker City Regatta, and the USRowing Masters National Championships. In the fall, masters rowed in these head races: Kings Head, Head of the Charles, and Head of the Schuylkill.

HOW WE SPENT OUR SUMMER VACATION*
From August 13th through 16th, 1800 men and women from all over the U.S. converged on the Cooper River in Camden, NJ for four days of racing, rooting for other racers, perusing the latest in rowing apparel and gadgets, and more. NRR was represented at this annual event by 11 of its masters rowers.
6 events - 6 medals: At the Masters National Championships rowers could race repeatedly against rowers their own age or younger. NRR rower, board member and youth head coach, Mark Malone, did just that medalled and medaled each time he hit the water. After a tough, close race with just one second separating first and second place, Mark won a silver medal in the lightweight D (50-59) single, but became the official 2009 US Masters National Champion in that event because the gentleman who beat him was from Canada.
Mark also won silver in the lightweight C (40-49) double, bronze in the lightweight D double and 3 Gold medals in quad races rowed with boatmates from other clubs.
"The sweetest race was the final Quad race where the lightweight NRR Composite went up against the best heavyweights in their age group and beat them with a wicked sprint in the last 250 meters," says Mark, pictured (third from left) with his boatmates.
The Masters National Championships also marked the debut race for NRR Masters Rowing Camp participants Deb Osepchuk, Lorraine Kornett, Lynn Clark, and Claudia Lucey (shown here). They made the finals in their quad event and had a seriously great time!
Linda Ensor and Chrys Raheb-Gileta not only rowed an NRR double, but also competed as part of composite crews in two quad events, making it to the finals in both. Also rowing, in the C Club quad event, were NRR's Atikah Ismail, Kay Vilardi, Susan Meltsner and Laura Cristo.

KING'S HEAD XXXIII REGATTA - 9/27/09
On Sunday, September 27th, 37 NRR rowers travelled to King of Prussia, PA (outside Philadelphia) for the King's Head XXXIII Regatta - a 3 mile race on the upper Schuylkill River.

With 12 boats - 5 Youth quads, a youth double; a youth single; 3 master's quads and a master's single and double - entered in 7 races, we made up the largest contingent of rowers to race at a single regatta in NRR history. The presence of dozens of supporters ensured a fantastic time and rewarding experience for all.
Gold medals went to NRR youth head coach Mark Malone, (men's senior master double - with Marc Daemon of Baltimore Rowing) and Linda Ensor (women's recreational single). For the rest of NRR's master rowers and youth, many racing for the first time, it was an impressive start to the season and an excellent warm up for bigger regattas to come.
