2011 USROWING MASTERS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS:
MARK MALONE BRINGS HOME THE GOLD (AND SILVER TOO)

"6 events, 3 gold medals and 3 silver, best competition and medal count to date"
: Those are the words NRR Masters champion and youth crew head coach Mark Malone used to sum up his four days of racing at the 2011 USRowing Masters National Championships in Oklahoma City.

The August 11 – 14th regatta featured 1,080 rowers from 90 clubs in 28 states competing for 199 national titles in both sweep and sculling events on a 1000 meter course. Competitors, who ranged in age from 21 to 80 years old, raced in events organized by age category.

Rowers could enter multiple events and race in categories below their own age range, but not above. They could also team up with rowers from other clubs to form composite boats, which Mark did in all but his singles race. His boatmates included rowers from New York Athletic Club, Baltimore Rowing Club and Oklahoma City Riversport.

2011 Masters National Championships Video Clip

This is a video of the HWT D 4X race in which Mark Malone’s LWT composite quad placed 2nd. The eventual winners were the ones being videoed, but about halfway through the clip, Mark’s crew comes up, seemingly out of nowhere, and appears to blow right by them.

William and Sarah Cooper Cup
NRR Youth ~ May 1, 2011 ~ Camden, NJ

On Sunday, May 1st, Navesink River Rowing took its youth Travel Team to the Cooper River in Camden, NJ for the William and Sara Cooper Cup Regatta.  It was the first race of the spring rowing season for this young, but talented crew, and they returned with two medals, excellent times and valuable experience. The Cooper Cup, a 2000 meter race on a buoyed course, attracts many of the top junior rowers on the east coast.  24 NRR youth participated, and all did very well, according to head coach, Mark Malone.

Race 8b, Heat 2 – Men’s Varsity 1X
Mike Guadagno: 4th place, 8:48:46. Mike is a freshman at CBA.  Rowing in the Varsity race because the JV and Novice single races were filled, Mike did very well in a field of older, more experienced rowers.
